Job Title: Volunteer Activity Instructor
Job Specification: Based at Fairthorne Manor, you will be trained to instruct a wide range of outdoor education activities. These include traditional outdoor pursuits such as canoeing/kayaking, climbing and sailing, as well as playwork delivered as part of our summer holiday Daycamps. You will be based within the Programme Team and supported by the permanent programme team. As an Apprentice Activity Instructor your main responsibilities are:

  • To take responsibility for activity sessions.
  • To ensure the correct and safe use of appropriate equipment.
  • To give clear instructions to enable individuals to participate in the session.
  • To have an awareness of the customers' aims and objectives, and wherever possible meet all requirements.
  • To be part of the duty system.
    Particular tasks associated with this include overseeing the running of the dining room and liaising with group leaders and responding to any issues.
  • To make the appropriate Head of Department aware of any defective equipment.
  • To take an active part in maintenance on a regular basis.
  • To be aware of, and put into practice, all Health and Safety regulations.
  • To have a working knowledge of Fairthorne Manor's operational policies.
  • To assist with the maintenance and cleaning of the estate.
  • To assist with duties in the kitchen and dining room.
  • To assist with the delivery of 'off site' youth and children's work.
  • To act in the interests of your own safety & the safety of others at all times
  • Anything else reasonably requested by the management of the organisation

Essential Skills:
  • An outgoing and friendly personality, able to communicate well and engage a wide range of people, including children, staff and group leaders.
  • A genuine enthusiasm for working with children
  • A genuine enthusiasm for the work of the organisation.
  • An aptitude for and interest in a wide range of sports.
  • Willingness to learn new skills and undergo training.
  • As this post involves working with children and living on site, all applicants must be aged 18years or older.

Additional Info: YMCA Fairthorne Group is a fast growing charity. Our mission is to champion and add value to young lives by providing experiences that challenge, enable and develop the individual. Fairthorne Manor, part of the Fairthorne Group, delivers outdoor education and environmental programmes to over 20,000 children and young people each year on both a residential and day basis. The programme consists of a wide range of activities, including canoeing, sailing, climbing, abseiling, archery and playwork. During term time, we deliver a diverse outdoor education programme to school and community groups, whilst during the holidays, we run an enormously successful Daycamp programme for children aged 4 to 16 years, catering for up to 450 children per day. We also run children's birthday parties and family open days. Fairthorne Manor delivers services and programmes 7 days of the week throughout most of the year.
